Whenever I drop in a pothole, I feel as if I am a victim of extortion by the government!
Why am I mandated to pay taxes and also to pay fees to ensure my vehicles are road worthy when the government apparently has no similar mandate to ensure that the roads are vehicle worthy? Furthermore, when I drop in a pothole and damage my front end and suspension parts and chop my tyres, I am required to pay to replace them, and that cost is inclusive of a GCT component which goes to the government; which in effect means that they have basically, either actively created or failed to prevent a situation from which they directly collect income aka......extortion.
It is the equivalent of a wrecker purposely pushing you off the road into a ditch, then charging you to extract your vehicle from that ditch.
The government needs to have some accountability for doing or not doing the job they are elected and employed to do, just as there are measures of accountability to which we as citizens must adhere.
How about zero rating the GCT on the purchase cost for tyres and front end parts until we have acceptable road surfaces to drive on?
I just bought brand new tyres less than two months ago, and now one of them needs to be replaced courtesy of dropping in a government pothole which could also have cost me my life.
I feel like either the Prime Minister, or the Member of Parliament for the area, or the Minister of Works or whoever is responsible personally needs to replace my tyre.
It's not fair!!!!!

WE WANT JUSTICE!!!!!!
Heads I win; tails you lose!
Re: WE WANT JUSTICE!!!!!!
How do we hold the state accountable ? We're taxed a number of ways to ensure the road ways are safe and driveable, yet this is not the case.

I get where you're coming from – it's frustrating to pay taxes and fees for road safety, only to have the government not keep up their end of the bargain with the roads themselves. When potholes damage our vehicles, it feels like we're being hit from both sides: paying for repairs and still not getting the roads we deserve. It's definitely something that needs to be addressed.
One way forward could be pushing for more transparency in how road maintenance funds are used, and maybe even considering things like zero-rating GCT on vehicle repairs caused by road damage...with evidence of...
It's only fair that if the government isn’t doing its part, they should at least ease the cost on citizens. Holding our leaders accountable is key, but it’s going to take all of us working together to make sure they listen and act. Pressure them...constant collective outcry... has to be incessant.

Devil's advocate here.
If the status quo does not change, what are we prepared to do about it?
Unless we think of an answer to this, then the govt has not inventive to divert any of the budget toward road maintenance.
Food for thought

For those who understand, not explanation is necessary.
For those who don't, no explanation is possible.
